Shirovasthi
Shirovasthi is the process of retaining medicinal oil over the head with the help of a suitable cap to
provide nourishment to brain cells to prevent brain cell damage.
Shiro Vasthi is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy designed to treat various ailments related to the head, particularly those affecting the scalp, brain, and cranial nerves. It is one of the four major forms of Murdha Taila (head oil therapies), wherein medicated oil is retained on the head for a specific duration to promote healing and balance.
In this procedure, a reservoir-like structure made from black gram dough is formed around the head, leaving an opening at the crown. Warm medicated oil, selected according to the individual’s condition and Dosha balance, is gently poured into this reservoir and retained for about 30 to 45 minutes. The duration and choice of oil are determined by the Ayurvedic physician based on the patient’s specific needs.
During the therapy, the warmth and medicinal properties of the oil deeply penetrate the scalp and head region, nourishing the underlying tissues, calming the nerves, and revitalizing the brain functions. This therapy is particularly effective for conditions such as chronic headaches, migraines, insomnia, stress, anxiety, neurological disorders, and certain scalp or hair problems.
By pacifying aggravated Vata Dosha—which governs the nervous system—Shiro Vasthi helps reduce pain, improve circulation, enhance memory and concentration, and promote sound sleep. The treatment not only provides immediate relief but also brings long-term rejuvenation and overall mental well-being.
