Elakizhi (Patra Pinda Swedam)
Kizhi Ayurvedic Treatment is a complete rejuvenation therapy comprising of synchronized special massage, Herbal Steam Bath, Njavarakizhi etc.
Elakizhi is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy in which small cloth bags (boluses) filled with medicinal leaves are heated in medicated oils and applied to the body. The boluses are gently pressed, massaged, or pounded over affected areas to deliver both heat and the healing properties of the herbs.
Medicinal Herbs Used
The selection of herbs depends on the patient’s condition and the desired therapeutic effect. Commonly used leaves include:
- Ficus benghalensis (Vata)
- Calotropis procera (Arka)
- Vitex negundo (Nirgundi)
- Ricinus communis (Eranda)
These herbs are valued for their anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and rejuvenating properties.
Preparation of Boluses:
- Fresh herbal leaves are chopped and sautéed with other herbal powders if needed.
- The mixture is tied into small cotton pouches (boluses).
- Before treatment, the boluses are dipped in warm medicated oil to enhance potency.
Procedure
- The therapist massages the affected area with the heated boluses, applying gentle tapping or pressing motions.
- The warmth opens the skin pores, allowing the herbal compounds to penetrate deeper tissues.
- The combination of heat, herbal medicine, and massage provides therapeutic relief.
